The Associated Students/CSUN Children’s Center had their annual Project Day Saturday, February 27, 2010. It was a time for CSUN families, their children, and the Center staff to gather and help with needed repairs and cleaning. There were individual classroom projects, playground projects, general maintenance repairs, and other projects around the Center to be accomplished.
Added to the list were projects to prepare the Center for its reaccreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children or NAEYC. The biggest project on the list was the replenishing of the wood chips surrounding the climbing structures. This task involved moving 40 cubic yards of wood chips from the parking lot next to the Center and placing them around the structure. The previous night the chips were dumped in the parking lot next to the Center. That night it also rained. It was to rain the next day as well.
Saturday morning arrived and so did the rain. The volunteers donned rain gear and went to work. They filled containers with the woodchips, lifted them over the fence, and then dumped them onto the playground. Within 3 hours all the woodchips were on the playground.
Among those who helped were a group of young men who belong to a CSUN campus organization called, Hermanos Unidos. They were a vital part of the project day success and the Children’s Center extends a warm thank you and wants to recognize this hermandad or “brotherhood” of young men. Without their help and willingness to get wet for a cause- the Center would not have been able to finish as quickly as they did. You are awesome!
