AS History

Important Milestones:

1957: First A.S. president, Ben Rude announces the first A.S. Council open seats.

1957: A.S. publishes its first issue of the school newspaper, named the SFV Campus State Standard (later named in the 5th issue as State Sundial).

1958: A.S. Constitution is ratified.

1961: A.S. is incorporated.

1961: A.S. Intramurals program is created.

1973: The Children’s Center opens doors for student parents.

1978: Student Productions and Campus Entertainment (S.P.A.C.E.) is created.

1990: A.S. Recycling Program established.

1991: Students pass referendum to support construction of a new building for the Children’s Center.

1995: Students pass referendum for Intercollegiate Athletic Program for scholarships and student-athletes.

1995: Accounting offers Metrolink transit passes to students at a discounted price.

1995: Fitness Centre opens in partnership with the USU.

1996: Referendum approved to support academic research in the form of the Academically Related Reserve Account.

2000: A.S. installs info screens on campus to provide advertisement for clubs, organization and departments on campus.

2001: A.S. creates the Intercollegiate Task Force

2001: First Big Show, hosted by S.P.A.C.E featuring Ozomatli and Teleclub.

2001: New Children’s Center building is completed.

2002: Referendum passed increasing AS fee $2 per student each year, stabilizing funding for AS programs and services and dramatically increasing funding for student organizations

2005: First A.S. Fair to welcome students back to a new school year.

2006 A.S. passes resolution to denounce violence against women and children

2007: First online elections.

2007: Referendum passed for a new recreation center.

2007: Outdoor adventures are added to A.S. Recreational Sports.

2007: A.S. funds CSUN banners which are placed outside the Oviatt Library to increase school spirit.

2008: A.S. Passes a Resolution in Support of SB-1301, The California Dream Act

2009:  The 1995 athletics referendum funding for intercollegiate athletics is redirected through alternative consultation toward Instructionally Related Activities, ARRA, and projects related to campus spirit and sustainability

2012:  Student Recreation Center opens and AS Recreation Sports expands sport clubs and outdoor programs; cedes intramurals and fitness programs to SRC.

2012:  “SPACE” becomes AS Productions
